“Eierpecken” and “Emmausgang”
Here’s how we celebrate Easter
Find out about two interesting activities that are not to be missed over the Easter weekend.
The festive Easter meal gets sporty with “Eierpecken”, a game where participants clash hard-boiled eggs together. Competitors face off, egg tip to egg tip or base to base – or, if necessary, even tip to base. The goal is to crack your opponent’s egg with precise strikes. The last egg standing, wins, and its owner claims the defeated egg. A winning tip: hold your egg so only the tip protrudes from your hand, as the egg’s side is more prone to breaking.
However, “Eierpecken” isn’t the sole tradition that defines our cherished customs. On Easter Monday, young and old, locals and even visitors on walking holidays in Tyrol, venture outdoors to participate in the “Emmausgang”. This tradition is rooted in the biblical story of the disciples’ walk to Emmaus, during which Jesus joined them incognito. This walk is more than just a physical activity; it’s a time for reflection. Some engage in prayer and song along the way, while others simply bask in the spring sunshine.
